The half of the printer you keep buying.

A printer is bought once. The stock that goes through it is bought for as long as you own the machine — and it is the part that decides whether the barcode still scans in a year, and whether the printhead lasts.

We supply labels and ribbons for Zebra printers in any standard size, matched to the machine you actually have rather than to a catalogue number you have to work out yourself.

Not a blank roll? Two other things live next door. Pre-printed labels arrive with your artwork, your barcodes or your numbers already on them. An asset label is different again — plastic or metal, and made to outlive the equipment it is stuck to.

Two kinds of stock

How long does the label have to last?

That is the whole question, and it is about the job rather than the machine. Weeks, and the cheaper stock is right. Years, and it is not.

Direct thermal

Heat-sensitive label, no ribbon

The label darkens under the printhead. Nothing else to buy, and nothing to load. It fades with sunlight, heat and handling, which is why it belongs on anything read within weeks — courier labels, despatch, date labels.

You buy: labels only.

Thermal transfer

Plain label, plus a ribbon

The ribbon melts onto the label, so the print does not fade. Two things to order instead of one, and they have to suit each other — wax, wax-resin and resin ribbons are not interchangeable, and the right pairing depends on the stock.

You buy: labels and ribbons.

Most printers take either — check before you assume yours will not. Every industrial machine runs both: load a ribbon or do not, and it does not care. Desktop printers are the ones where it can be decided for you, because the ribbon-free models are built without the mechanism and cannot be converted later. If you are not sure which you have, send us a photograph of the machine and we will tell you.

The pairing is what kills printheads. A resin ribbon run against the wrong stock, or a label that is more abrasive than the head was designed for, takes the printhead out early — and a replacement printhead is the expensive part of the printer. Getting that pairing right is most of what we are for, and it is why we ask what machine you have before quoting anything.

Usually in stock — the quote confirms it. Most of this moves often enough to ship the same week. Some of it, particularly the ones that come off cleanly, is made in small batches to order rather than held for a year: removable adhesive cures on the shelf in a hot warehouse, and a label that tears instead of lifting is worse than one you waited a fortnight for.

Sizes not on this list are ordinary rather than exotic — the list is what moves, not what exists. Send the dimensions.

No label printer, or not yet

A4 laser sheet labels.

Sheets of labels that go through the laser or inkjet printer already sitting in the office. We supply them, and they are the right answer more often than a barcode company usually admits.

When a sheet is right

Low volume, and nothing to buy

A few dozen labels a week, an office that already has a printer, and no appetite for a machine, a ribbon, stock and software before the first label comes out. Print what you need on the equipment you own. For a small operation or a job that happens twice a year, that is the sensible purchase and we will say so.

When it stops being right

Four things that end it

Cost per label is considerably higher than a dedicated label printer, and it is the reason most people move. The range is smaller — far fewer sizes, colours and materials than the roll stock above.

One label costs you thirty. Print a single label off a sheet of thirty and the other twenty-nine are spoiled. And laser printers eat them: a curved paper path jams sheet labels, and the heat inside the machine gets into the adhesive.

Tell us the size and how many, and we will quote them. The sheet sizes we supply are not on this page yet. That is a gap on our side rather than a limit on what you can have — send the dimensions and the quantity and the answer comes back with the price either way.

If the honest answer is that you have outgrown sheets, we will tell you that too, and the cheapest desktop machine that ends the problem is on the printers page.

Straight answer

We quote these rather than list them.

Not to be coy about it. Consumables genuinely do not have one price, and publishing a single number would be wrong for most of the ways you can buy them.

They come by the carton, and the carton is not a fixed thing

The same 102 × 150 mm label is four rolls to a box in one configuration and five in another. Fanfold is bought by the box outright — 3,000 labels, no smaller unit. Ribbons have their own minimums again. A price per roll would be a price for something you often cannot actually order.

Sometimes we break the carton anyway

For customers we hold stock for, we open the box and send four ribbons rather than sixteen. That costs more per unit and is worth it if the alternative is a year of stock in your storeroom. It is also not a number that belongs on a webpage.

Most of it ships direct

Straight to your door rather than through our hands first, which saves a leg of freight and a day. Freight depends on where you are, and a carton of labels to Parramatta is not a carton of labels to Port Hedland.

Tell us what you have and we will price it

Same day on a weekday if it is something we hold. A custom size, material or quantity takes about a day — there is a real answer to work out and we would rather be right than quick.

If you are already buying labels somewhere, send us what is on the box and we will quote the same thing — or tell you honestly that what you have is right and we cannot beat it.

This is the shelf.

If you already buy labels somewhere

The four reasons people move.

In the order we actually hear them, after thirty-five years of having the conversation. Nobody changes label supplier for fun — something happened.

Price

It is the first reason and there is no point pretending otherwise. So: if you buy labels regularly and somebody is cheaper, tell us. We would rather match it and keep the account than win the argument.

That offer is for people who buy again. A single carton at cost helps neither of us, and we will say so rather than quote you something we cannot repeat.

Lead times and availability

Four weeks for something that used to take four days, and usually no warning until the storeroom is already empty. A label that arrives late stops a dispatch bench as completely as a broken printer does, and costs more.

We hold the high movers here rather than ordering them when you ask, which is the entire difference on this one.

Paper and ribbon quality

Faint print, labels that curl or lift off a carton in the cold, adhesive that gives up in a hot yard. And the expensive version: a ribbon and a stock that were never meant to meet, quietly wearing out printheads. Two or three heads in a couple of years is not bad luck.

A new requirement they cannot fill

The job changes. Now it needs a freezer-grade adhesive, or a synthetic that survives outdoors, or a removable that comes off retail stock without a mark, or a size nobody stocks. The existing supplier has a catalogue and the catalogue does not have it.

Still running a 2844? We can keep it fed.

It is a twenty-year-old desktop printer and there is no point pretending otherwise. We will not sell you one, and when one finally stops a service call costs more than the machine is worth — that is arithmetic, not us declining the work. What we can do is sell you labels that fit it, and plenty of them are still running.

What it takes

Four inch, direct thermal, 25 mm core

That is the entire specification you need in order to buy labels for one, and it is the same for the LP2844, the TLP2844 and the Z versions. No ribbon — the image comes out of the heat and the paper, which is why the print fades in a few years and why it was never the right label for an asset.

We carry nineteen direct thermal lines on a 25 mm core, ten of them 102 mm wide in five lengths — 102 × 150 for despatch, then 99, 73, 60 and 48. The part number is the quick way to tell: anything with DT25 in it is direct thermal on a 25 mm core, and those are the ones a 2844 takes. Most of the direct thermal range is on a 76 mm core for the bigger machines and will not fit.

When it does stop

The ZD220 is the same job

Four inch, direct thermal, 203 dpi, USB — which is the 2844's whole description written twenty years later. From $509 inc GST, and it takes the same labels, so nothing on the shelf is wasted when you change over.

Worth knowing before you order. A 2844 that has been in service a long time often prints light because the printhead is worn rather than because the labels are wrong. If new labels do not fix it, that is the printer telling you something — and on a machine this old it is telling you to spend the money on the replacement rather than the part.

We will send you a short roll. Run it and see.

No minimum, nothing to sign and no salesman rings afterwards. Tell us the size and what the printer is, and a roll goes in the post — enough to run a real job rather than three labels to look at.

Why it matters more than it looks

A label is not a label

The same 102 × 150 from two suppliers can differ in the adhesive, the facestock and how the coating takes heat, and none of that shows on a spec sheet. The only honest test is your printer, your surface and your scanner — which is not a test anybody can run for you from Berowra.

What to do with it

Run it like a normal day

Same machine, same darkness setting, same scanner that has to read it afterwards — and if it is a direct thermal label, leave a few somewhere warm for a week and look again. If it does not beat what you already buy, keep buying what you already buy. We will say so ourselves rather than let you find out on a pallet.

If it needs a ribbon, tell us which one you use. A thermal transfer label tested with the wrong ribbon is a fair test of nothing — the pairing is what decides whether the print survives a scuff or a freezer. We will send the matching ribbon with the roll so you are trying the thing you would actually be buying.
