Device management · SOTI MobiControl and SOTI Connect

“How many of our scanners are still on the old Android?”

If you have forty Android devices in a warehouse, or four hundred, that question has a real answer. Almost nobody can give it. Not because the information does not exist — because nothing is collecting it.

SOTI is what collects it. This page is what it does, where Zebra's own tools are already enough, and how to get a renewal quoted without moving your hardware. We quote, supply and renew the licences, and if you do not need them we would rather say so now than after the invoice.

What it actually is

Three products, and only two of them are about scanners.

SOTI sell a platform of five or six pieces. These are the ones that matter in a warehouse.

01

MobiControl — the handhelds

Enrol a device before anyone opens the carton, using Android zero-touch, and it comes up on your wifi running your app. After that: which Android version and security patch each device is on, app rollout through Managed Google Play, lockdown so an operator gets your screen and nothing else, and OS and firmware updates pushed rather than walked around.

02

Connect — the printers

The same idea applied to label printers, which is the half that rarely gets managed at all. Firmware, settings and certificates on a printer you never walk out to, plus what the printer itself is reporting about its own condition. This is the section below, because it is the part we are actually unusual at.

03

XSight — why it broke

Remote view and control of a device while the operator is standing in front of it, and the history of what it was doing before it stopped. The useful part is the history. "It crashed this morning" is not a fault report; a log of what happened at 09:14 is.

SOTI also manages Apple, Windows and Linux. We do not. Everything on this page is Android — Zebra handhelds, and printers. If your problem is three hundred iPhones, we are the wrong people, and you should hear that on the phone rather than find it out after the quote.

The half that usually gets forgotten

Printers. Ask the others about the dispatch bay.

Every device management company will happily discuss your scanners. Ask what they do about the printer that labels every carton going out the door, and the conversation tends to stop.

What Connect reads

Over sixty data points, and four of them matter

SOTI count more than sixty things a printer reports about itself. The ones worth watching are printhead temperature, print cycles, memory and battery. Firmware goes on without visiting the printer. Configuration rules apply to new and legacy printers alike, so a replacement comes up set the same way as the one it replaced — which is the bit that normally takes a phone call and an afternoon.

Why that lands with us

We are the people who replace the printhead

Printhead temperature and a print-cycle count are not trivia here. They are two of the numbers that tell you a head is near the end of its life, and we sell and fit printheads for a living. We can read that dashboard and tell you which printer is about to start printing too light — and have the part on the shelf.

A device management specialist can show you the same number. They cannot do anything about it.

Connect is not Zebra-only. SOTI list Avery Dennison, Bixolon, Brady, Brother, cab, Epson, Microplex, Printronix, SATO, Toshiba, TSC and Zebra. If your dispatch bay has two brands in it because of something somebody bought in 2019, that is rather the point.

Being fair about it

Zebra's own tools do a lot of this. Sometimes they are enough.

We sell Zebra hardware. We are not going to pretend Zebra DNA Cloud does not exist, or that it is bad — it is not.

Stay where you are if

Every device is a current Zebra handheld

Zebra DNA Cloud does remote setup and configuration, a dashboard with OS version, serial number and battery health, settings and app installs through Mobility Extensions, a locked-down home screen, and LifeGuard security patches over the air. If your fleet is all Zebra, all reasonably current, and all computers rather than printers, that is a real answer and it may well be all you need.

We will tell you so. We would rather sell you nothing than sell you a second console doing a job you already have covered.

Look at SOTI if

Any one of these is true

Printers are in scope. Zebra manage printers with different software altogether; Connect puts them in the same console as the handhelds.
There is a second brand in the fleet. Honeywell, Datalogic, or whatever arrived with an acquisition.
Some devices are old. Tooling follows current models; fleets do not.
You need to watch an operator's screen while they describe the fault.

These are different products with different jobs, not a better one and a worse one. The question is not which is stronger. It is whether your fleet is all Zebra, all current, and all handhelds. Tell us honestly and we will tell you honestly, and one of those two answers earns us nothing.

If you are already on it

A renewal has nothing to do with where the hardware came from.

This is the part worth knowing, and it is the reason this page exists at all.

The licence is not the scanner

You can change who quotes it without moving a device

SOTI licences are quoted per device and per term. Whoever supplied the handhelds three years ago does not own the renewal, and nothing has to be unplugged, re-enrolled or shipped anywhere for somebody else to quote it. You keep the console, the configuration and the devices. The invoice is the only thing that changes.

Send us the device count, which licence each one is on, and the renewal date. That is enough.

And one honest thing about terms

Three years is not a discount. It is today's price, held

As things stand, two years and three years cost the same per device per month. Signing longer buys you no reduction at all, and you should divide it out and check rather than take our word for it.

What the third year actually buys you is today's price. The alternative is coming back in two years and renewing at whatever the rate is then. We cannot tell you what that will be — but across every price revision we have seen on these licences, not one has come in lower than the year before. Every one of them has gone up.

Start the conversation three months out, not three weeks. A renewal that lands inside a fortnight turns into a purchase order raised under pressure, and that is how people end up on the wrong term. If your date is in the next six months, it is already worth a phone call.

What we have actually done with it

250 devices. Three years, and renewed.

Not a brochure claim — an estate we quote, renew and count.

150 Android handhelds on MobiControl and 100 label printers on Connect, run for three years and renewed in 2026 for another two. The printers are forty per cent of it, which is unusual, and it is the reason this page leads with them.

What three years of that is worth is narrower and more useful than a wall of logos. We have raised the quotes, handled the renewal, and counted the licences against the devices that actually exist — which is where renewals go wrong. The count on the paperwork and the count in the warehouse were not the same number, and finding that out before the renewal rather than after it is most of the job.

We are not a software company and this is not our software. We sell Zebra hardware, labels and ribbons, and we repair printers. SOTI sits on top of that because it is the same fleet. If you want a company whose entire business is device management, they exist and they are good at it — what they cannot do is fit your printhead on Thursday.

On price, since every other page here has one

No figure on this page. Here is why.

Every printer and every scanner on this site carries its price, and so do the call-out and workshop rates. We think publishing the number is the single most useful thing a website in this trade can do.

A licence does not work that way, and we are not going to invent a number to keep the pattern. It depends on which licence each device needs, how many there are, and how long you are signing for — and a handheld licence and a printer licence are not the same price.

What we will do is quote it properly and show you the arithmetic: per device, per month, per term, so you can divide it yourself and find that it comes out where we said it would.

And ask us what we think before you ask us for a quote. If the answer is that Zebra's own console already covers you, that is a two-minute phone call and it costs you nothing. We have given that answer before.

What are you running, and when does it expire?

Device counts, which licence each one is on, and the renewal date if you have one. We will tell you what we would charge, what we would configure differently, and whether you need it at all.
